The Jolly Roger

The jolly roger comes from the English slang term Old Roger, which was a pseudonym for the devil. It first came into use at the end of the seventeenth century. Common themes were the Death's head (a skull), cross bones, daggers, swords, and hour glasses. There was never one uniform version of a Jolly Roger, instead it varied from ship to ship, and wasn't even used by all pirates even when it became widely popular.
